ABOUT US

The Long Island Hammerheads is a wheelchair lacrosse club, and a non-profit organization who seeks to allow disabled athletes to participates in sports once again.

HISTORY

Safeway Era

2015-2019

In Winter of 2015, Mike Nelson, then president of the LIMLF, was approached by USA Lacrosse regarding wheelchair lacrosse on Long Island. Two young men who were interested in participating were Savario Marzocca and Charlie Ruf. He and the LIMLF agreed to start the program, and they began with a clinic and recruitment drive. With the help of other able bodied vounteers, and local college men's teams, this new program were able to compete in scrimmages and games. Their disabled athletes' participation continued to grow.

In 2016, under the banner of Safeway Lacrosse/LIMLF, the group traveled to and participated in the first Wheelchair Lacrosse Nationals in Ocean CIty, Maryland.

In 2017, "The Hammerheads" were born. In 2019, The Hammerheads, still under the LIMLF banner, hosted that year's National WLUSA tournament in Old Bethpage. The Hammerheads finished ranked 10th the country.

Hammerheads Era

2020 - present

In 2020 the program was halted due to the COVID pandemic and resumed in 2021. In 2025, no longer under the umbrella of the LIMLF, the Long Island Hammerheads wheelchair lacrosse, inc. debuted. In August 2026, the Long Island Hammer will travel to Buffalo, NY to participate in their 3rd WLUSA National Tournament.

WLUSA Appearance

In 2026, the Long Island Hammerheads continue their schedule playing teams such as Hofstra, Molloy, Adelphi, Farmingdale State, NYPD and the FDNY and will travel to Buffalo in August to compete in the Nationals.

We are proud members of WLUSA, the national governing body for wheelchair lacrosse. This affiliation ensures our athletes compete at the highest level of wheeathletics while adhering to the most rigorous national standards for safety and excellence.

Long Island Metro Lacrosse Foundation

We are no longer affiliated with the LIMLF as of February 2025.
